Description UIC Science General Manager

Summary: The general manager leads, directs, and administers activities in a legal and ethical manner in compliance with laws and regulations and in conformity with the goals, philosophies, and polices. Seek to obtain optimum efficiency and economy of operations and maximize profits by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate managers or supervisors. Interface with customers and represent the Company at applicable events/meetings. Maintains excellent customer/client communications to permit efficient problem resolution and acceptance of new services or programs. Direct and coordinate financial and budget activities to forecast and fund operations, maximize investments, and increase efficiency and profitability. The General Manager will be required to represent UIC Science and the greater UIC at different events and in front of domestic and international clientele. This is a Barrow based position.

Duties and Responsibilities:
Key Management Responsibilities:
• Monitor, and provide oversight and management of all UIC Science operations.
• Work with other UIC operations and operating groups to ensure client’s needs are being met.
• Assure adequate systems and procedures are monitored with regard to proposals, bid conditions, fees, and target objectives.
• Applicant will promote and pursue new areas of work opportunities and recommend potential alliances necessary to secure work.
• Manage 8(a) small business reporting and management requirements as well as continued 8(a) business development.
• Represent and speak on behalf of UIC Science and our mission at various scientific and business development gatherings like the American Geophysical Union and the Arctic Circle Assembly.
• Develop annual business and marketing plan for UIC Science.
• Develop and manage annual operating budget for UIC Science.
• Be a voice for the merging of indigenous and local knowledge and western science at speaking events.
• Negotiate and manage all contracts and subcontracts for UIC Science.
• Manage Barrow Arctic Research Center and Charles Etok Edwardsen Barrow Environmental Observatory.
• Provide oversight of the Arctic Research Network and ensure our clients have continual internet connectivity to project locations.
• Additional duties as assigned.
Knowledge & Critical Skills/Expertise:
• Must have strong managerial, leadership and business skills.
• Must have experience managing 8(a) or other federal contracts and be familiar with the requirements associated with federal contracting.
• A solid understanding of staffing requirements and skills needed for organizational performance.
• Understanding of cost accounting, budgetary practices, human resource management, and strategic planning.
• Must manage and forecast revenue growth, and company goals and staffing requirements.
• Must have an understanding of Alaska Native, American Indian and multicultural working environments.
• Must be familiar with the science fields and understand logistics and project planning.
• Must be comfortable speaking in front of large groups and have effective communication skills.
Requirements Required Experience:
• Minimum of five (5) years + of professional experience
• Bachelor’s Degree in science or related field required.
• PMP certification preferred.
• Staff development, training, and supervisory experience required
• Demonstrated experience leading successful teams
• Demonstrated track record of completing successful projects with repeat clients.
• Demonstrated experience working as a team player in a Multi-Cultural environment.
• Excellent written/verbal skills, computer proficiency required including and extensive working knowledge of MS Office Suite, and others.

Physical Demands:
• Moderate Travel
• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to read text on a computer screen and in hard copy, stand or sit, talk, and hear.
• Exposure to moderate levels of noise in a well-lit, well-ventilated and moderately paced office environment.
• Occasionally required to carry/lift up to 20 lbs.

Work Environment Summary:
• Typical office setting.
• Travel to various meetings and speaking events.
• In a large office building.
• Applicant may be subject to environmental conditions of a general office setting.

If the position requires, an applicant must pass a pre-employment criminal background history check. All post-secondary education listed on the applicant’s resume/application may be subject to verification.

Where driving may be required or where a rental car must be obtained for business travel purposes, applicants must have a valid driver license for this position and will be subject to verification. In addition, the applicant must pass an in-house, online, driving course to be authorized to drive for company purposes.
