Description SUMMARY:
Use hand-welding or flame-cutting equipment to weld or join metal components or to fill holes, indentations, or seams of fabricated metal products.
• Weld components in flat, vertical, or overhead positions.
• Operate safety equipment and use safe work habits.
• Lay out, position, align, and secure parts and assemblies prior to assembly, using straightedges, combination squares, calipers, and rulers.
• Examine work pieces for defects and measure work pieces with straightedges or templates to ensure conformance with specifications.
• Recognize, set up, and operate hand and power tools common to the welding trade, such as shielded metal arc and gas metal arc welding equipment.
• Weld separately or in combination, using aluminum, stainless steel, cast iron, and other alloys.
• Clamp, hold, tack-weld, heat-bend, grind or bolt component parts to obtain required configurations and positions for welding.
• Select and install torches, torch tips, filler rods, and flux, according to welding chart specifications or types and thicknesses of metals.
• Ignite torches or start power supplies and strike arcs by touching electrodes to metals being welded, completing electrical circuits.
• Connect and turn regulator valves to activate and adjust gas flow and pressure so that desired flames are obtained.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Knowledge of the welding process and equipment.
• Ability to weld vertical, flat, and overhead welds with a good penetration and a quality appearance.
• Ability to operate a plasma cutter and acetylene torches.
• Good communications skills relative to supervisor and other related departments.
• Math skills including fractions and angles.
• Ability to read tape measures and angle finders.
• Ability to read blueprint drawings and cut lists.
• Ability to lift 50 pounds.
• Physical ability to work and weld in awkward positions such as kneeling, lying down, and overhead.
• Ability to climb and work from a ladder.
• Ability to operate various shop tools including power and manually operated wrenches.
• Experience: 1 to 3 years welding related experience and /or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Walk, stand on concrete floor, asphalt in works yard
• Bend, stoop, crouch, kneel and crawl to repair and fabricate
• Reach below, at and above shoulder height to repair and fabricate
• Insert hand(s) into confined areas to repair and fabricate
• Hand, power and air tool use is required
• Welders need good eyesight, hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity.
• Climb, stand and balance on ladders or the vehicles and equipment to perform repair or
• fabrication
• Work above shoulders in cervical extension from a stand, bend, stoop, crouch, kneel to perform repair or fabrication
• Work under vehicles and equipment to make repair or fabrication
• Operate hand controls on one-ton jib crane
• Weld and use cutting torches in poorly ventilated Welding Shop

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles and extreme heat.
• The noise level in the work environment can be loud
• Safety requirements for this position are safety glasses, hearing protection and steel-toed work boots.
• Welders may work alone or as a part of a team in a plant or when performing work on construction or maintenance projects.
• To prevent burns and eye injuries, welders wear protective clothing, goggles and helmets.
• They may have to withstand loud noise and vibration.
• Welders normally work both inside and outside.
