The Laborer provides support for the Environmental Cleanup Services in Kaktovik this summer. The work environment is dirty, dusty, and noisy, containing potentially hazardous substances and/or materials and is subject to inclement or extreme weather conditions. Work includes handling potentially hazardous materials and use of personal protective equipment.

Essential Functions:

• Perform physical labor associated with cleanup activities, waste removal and other remediation services.

• Follow applicable safety rules, regulations, guidelines, policies, and site specific safety plans when performing cleanup activities and donning protective gear.

• Operate routinely used tools and equipment.

• Perform routine inspection and preventive maintenance on assigned equipment.

• Hazardous Waste Operations.

• Performs other duties as assigned by Project Supervisor.

Knowledge and Critical Skills/Expertise:

• Must have hazardous waste experience and 24 hr HAZWOPER certification, or be able to successfully complete 24 hr HAZWOPER course (prior to start date).

• Must have Asbestos Awareness in Construction certification, or be able to successfully complete 2 hr Asbestos course (prior to start date).

• Must have 1.5 hr Lead Awareness training, or be able to successfully complete 1.5 hr Lead Awareness course (prior to start date).

• Must be able to pass Half and Full face respirator fit test.

• High school diploma or GED • Pass a pre-employment drug screen.

• Legally eligible to work in the United States (verified through E-Verify).

• Must be able to interpret and follow written and oral instructions and assignments.

• Ability to execute instructions and remain flexible in a dynamic environment.

• Must be able to work harmoniously as part of a Company team as well as provide excellent services to customers.

• Must have good oral and written communications skills.


Required Experience:

• Must be able to successfully complete a background check and pass drug screenings.

Physical Demands:

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be required to read text on a computer screen and in hard copy, stand or sit, talk, and hear.

• Exposure to moderate levels of noise in a well-lit, well-ventilated and moderately paced environment.

• Employee must always have good balance and coordination in order to safely walk over catwalks, enter/ exit hatches, and over uneven and/or slippery surfaces.

• Must be able to climb ladders, stairwells, and push knees.

• Must be able to work in cold/hot weather while wearing required PPE (e.g. chemical protective clothing, respirators, goggles, etc.).

• Employee must be able to write in English, read in English, calculate, have estimation skills, possess good verbal presentation and be able to communicate using the radio, speaker, or electronic communication by using the English language.

• Repetitive and prolonged postures involving standing, sitting, twisting, squatting, kneeling, stooping and reaching to full range from above the head to the ground.

• Employee must have the ability to move extremities and spine through full physiological range of motion that will permit the employee to work in a variety of postures involving postures allowing reaching with hands from ground level to overhead level.

Environmental Conditions / Field Setting:

• Cramped, confined spaces.

• May work in fog, dark, and other visibility limiting conditions.

• May be exposed to fuels, solvents, cleaners, dust, fumes, smoke, and gases.

• Irregular working hours • Arctic environment including low temperatures, high wind, icing, plenty of moisture.

• Frequent hazards include hypothermia, pinch points, sprains, strains, slips, falls, concussive impacts, and lifting injuries.

• Hazard awareness and corrective action is a constant function of the job due to the extreme work environment.

Authorized Driver Requirement:

• Employee must have a valid driver’s license and three (3) year clean driving record. Employee must follow all Authorized Driver Policy and Procedures regarding approved vehicle usage.

Drug and Alcohol Testing Programs:

• All employees must pass Non-DOT pre-employment drug screening and follow all UMIAQ Environmental Non-DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Program guidelines and requirements.

• If working on a DOT project, employees must pass a DOT pre-employment drug screening and follow all DOT Drug and Alcohol Testing Program requirements.
