Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates is seeking a highly organized, independent, and motivated intern to support the firm’s public transit planning sector. This is an outstanding opportunity for the right person to become involved in building Nelson\Nygaard’s practice, which is focused on transportation planning for livable communities. Candidates with immediate availability will strongly be considered for an earlier start.

Intern responsibilities will depend on specific needs of projects that are undertaken, but will likely include research, data collection, spreadsheet analysis, mapping, writing and editing reports, development of outreach materials in support of transit planning projects. There will be numerous opportunities for the candidate to contribute to Nelson\Nygaard projects in the Boston area and in New England as well as across the United States. Candidates must be willing to travel within New England.


We are looking for candidates who have a passion for public transportation and are interested in making communities better for our clients and their constituents.  The ideal candidate would be someone who:

(1) Has completed his/her first year of a Master’s in planning program and who is focusing on transportation planning or

(2) Has a Bachelor's or Master of Science degree in a related field and is interested in gaining experience prior to entering graduate school for planning.

Potential candidates must demonstrate:

  • Excellent skills in writing, data analysis, oral presentation and problem solving
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint


Experience in one or more of the following areas is not required but is beneficial:

  • Proficiency using ArcGIS for tasks such as analyzing census demographic information and displaying transit networks/ridership statistics
  • Experience using Adobe Illustrator in conjunction with outputs from ArcGIS to create visually appealing maps
  • Additional experience with graphics (InDesign, SketchUp), modeling (Synchro, TransCAD) or database analysis is preferred


Potential candidates may be asked to demonstrate their writing and basic data analysis skills. 

Salary and Benefits
