Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates is seeking a highly organized, independent, and motivated principal for our nationally recognized transit planning practice in the Boston office. In this position, the successful candidate will be expected to serve as a project manager for medium- and large-scale transit studies, as well as support transit business development efforts. Work will include responsibility for client communication, overall task and project management, determining and managing analytical tasks, client communication, public presentation, and other skills as necessary. The successful candidate is expected to lead proposals, be responsible for overall business development targets, and provide guidance and oversight to our very talented and experienced junior staff. Your projects may be located anywhere throughout the United States, and thus a willingness and desire to travel is essential. You will work closely with Nelson\Nygaard’s senior and junior transit staff in our other offices across the US.


Qualifications and Requirements

The ideal candidate should have a broad range of transit service planning and consulting experience. A candidate should be able to demonstrate significant expertise in the following areas:

  • Transit Service Planning
  • Short and Long Range Transit Planning
  • Comprehensive Operational Analysis (COA)
  • Transit/shuttle service design, planning and operations
  • Bus Rapid Transit/Rapid Bus and Corridor Analyses
  • Transit Master Plans
  • Campus transit planning
  • Transit station area planning

Additional experience with emerging mobility, paratransit, and demand-responsive systems is a plus.

At a minimum, the candidate should meet the following qualifications:

  • At least ten (10) years of responsible experience in transit service planning
  • A bachelor’s or more advanced degree in urban or transportation planning, or a related planning field. Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Successful and sustained experience in business development (i.e., winning work) and client relations
  • Excellent written, verbal, and other communication skills, including facilitating public workshops.
  • The ability to manage complex projects on time and on budget.
  • Demonstrate advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.


Salary and Benefits

The annual salary range equivalent for this position is industry competitive, depending on qualifications and years of experience. Benefits include medical, dental and vision insurance, pre-tax transit or bicycling benefit, a 401k program, life insurance and paid time off.
