Nelson\Nygaard Consulting Associates is seeking a highly organized, independent, and motivated Senior Associate for our nationally recognized multimodal, smart parking, and transportation demand management practice in the Boston office. This is an outstanding opportunity for the right person to become involved in developing transportation systems for vibrant, livable communities on the east coast and around the country. The right person will be able to develop and provide integrated, creative, actionable solutions in keeping with Nelson\Nygaard’s current work, which further emphasizes creative and innovative community involvement.

We are seeking an individual with at least six (6) years of experience and a strong interest in the above areas.   Experience working on projects in the Northeast and Boston region are a plus.

Responsibilities

In this position, the successful candidate will be expected to serve as Deputy Project Manager and Task Leader for larger projects and Project Manager for small to mid-sized projects, often with the involvement and guidance of other principals.

The successful candidate is expected to contribute to and eventually lead proposals, be responsible for overall business development targets, and provide guidance and oversight to junior staff.

While most of the work will focus on projects in the New England and Mid-Atlantic region, your projects may be located anywhere throughout the United States, and thus a willingness and desire to travel is essential. You will also work closely with senior and junior staff from other Nelson\Nygaard offices throughout the country.

The ideal candidate should have a broad range of transportation and urban planning experience, preferably with a focus on multimodal planning and design, smart parking strategies, and transportation demand management.  A candidate should be able to demonstrate significant expertise in at least five (5) of the following areas:

Multimodal & Mobility Strategies

Parking Policy and Management

Transportation master planning

Smart parking regulations

Site mobility planning

Parking needs and requirements

Station area planning

Alternatives to building more parking

Campus transportation planning

TDM strategies linked to parking

Planning for shuttles/circulators

 

Bike/pedestrian planning

GHG Reduction/Greening

TOD/smart growth

CO2 Reductions and Carbon Offset

Transit demand management (TDM)

VMT Reduction Strategies

Sales tax expenditure planning

"Green" transit / taxi studies

Street design

TDM strategies linked to greening

The ideal candidate will also have experience with advanced geospatial analysis and database management (GIS, Excel, Access), and advanced graphics communications (InDesign, Illustrator, SketchUp, Photoshop, CAD).  Fluency in computer traffic modeling (Synchro, VISSIM, TransCAD) is a plus.

Successful applicants will be expected to:

  • Creatively solve multimodal transportation problems
  • Demonstrate excellent written and verbal skills
  • Possess proven experience in managing projects within budget
  • Work successfully with clients, members of the public, and project teams
  • Mentor and train junior staff
  • Supervise data collection efforts
  • Outline and prepare successful proposals and reports
  • Analyze a wide range of transportation data and manage the quality control and completion of technical analyses, feasibility studies, and other transportation reports
  • Prepare and give effective presentations

 

At a minimum, the candidate should meet the following qualifications:

  • At least six (6) years of responsible experience in transportation planning, traffic engineering, or a related field.
  • A bachelor’s or more advanced degree in urban or transportation planning, or a related field. Master’s degree is preferred.
  • Successful experience in business development (i.e., winning work).
  • Excellent written, verbal, and other communication skills, including facilitating public workshops.
  • The ability to manage projects on time and on budget.
  • Demonstrate advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
  • Experience mentoring junior staff

 

Salary and Benefits

The annual salary range equivalent for this position is industry competitive, depending on qualifications and years of experience. Benefits include medical, dental and vision insurance, pre-tax transit or bicycling benefit, a 401k program, life insurance and paid time off.
