About This Role:

Under general direction, the Senior Mold Design Engineer develops mold design and detail drawings using established standards to insure maximum mold quality and efficiency for all product lines. S/he provides support and coordinates engineering changes and future mold tooling development.

Essential Job Functions/Tasks:

1. Designs complex injection molds that are dimensionally accurate, dependable, and durable in construction.

2. Assists and advises members of the tooling department in all areas of the mold manufacturing process: CNC, EDM, and Mold Making.

3. In coordination with Tooling Managers, troubleshoots new and existing production tooling to maximize efficiency.

4. Assists Mold Repair team with design, mold repair and mold revisions to existing molds.

5. Collaborates with Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering and Mold Makers on mold design projects.

6. Coordination all of mold tooling Request for Quotations(RFQs).

7. Responsible for organizing and facilitating mold design review meetings with tooling vendors.

8. Works with the assigned NPD Project Manager to meet the expected tooling schedule.

9. Coordinates mold tooling projects with outside suppliers. Coordinates engineering changes with internal and external resources.

10. Participates on the New Product Development team meetings.

Other Job Functions:

Performs other related tasks as assigned, some of which may become essential to the position.

Requirements Education/Training Required:

Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering or equivalent education and work experience.

Experience Required:

Minimum ten years of experience in mold design, including progressive experience in mechanical drafting.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities (KSA’s):

KSA #1: Working knowledge of the plastic injection molding industry, with understanding of specialized manufacturing methods and practices related to the construction of high production plastic injection molds.

KSA #2: Attention to detail with the ability to work with close tolerances, strong mechanical aptitude, strong mathematical skills (algebra, geometry, trigonometry), proven problem-solving skills, and practical understanding of strength of materials as it pertains to plastic injection molds.

KSA #3: Knowledge of plastic resins and their molding characteristics.

KSA #4: Excellent knowledge of the principles of good plastic part design with the ability to assist the new product development team.

KSA #5: Applied knowledge of tool steels and alloy materials used in the manufacturing of injection molds.

KSA #6: Understanding of tool room equipment and its primary function and capabilities in the manufacturing of plastic injection molds.

KSA #7: Expertise with solid modeling software: ProEngineer, SolidWorks and Mold flow.

KSA #8: Excellent written and verbal communication skills in English.

KSA #9: Excellent interpersonal skills to work with members across the organization.

KSA #10: Ability to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.

KSA #11: Excellent organizational skills and the ability to work within time lines.

KSA #12: Ability to travel domestically and internationally. Must have or be able to obtain a valid passport.

Physical Demands:

Regularly required to stand; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms.

Required to walk; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.

Occasionally required to sit and climb or balance.

Regularly lift, push, pull and/or move up to 70 pounds.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment:

Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts, odors and fumes or airborne particles.

Frequently exposed to vibration.

Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, outside weather conditions, and risk of static electrical shock.

The noise level in the work environment is usually loud and may require Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
